MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

There are a whole lot of musical instruments designed to create different desired effects in music. There are:

  • Percussion instruments
  • String instruments
  • Woodwind instruments
  • Brass instruments
  • Keyboard instruments

PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS:
Sounds are produced through our percussion instruments either by striking them or shaking them. Examples are bass drum, conga drum, cymbal, Tom-Tom, snare drum, marimba, tambourine, triangle, vibraphone, xylophone, gong, maracas, chimes, bongo drums, timpani e.t.c.

STRING INSTRUMENTS:
String instruments can be played either by plucking, picking, strumming or bowing. Examples are guitar, banjo, cello, violin, viola, double bass, electric guitar, Hawaiian guitar e.t.c.

WOODWIND INSTRUMENTS:
Sounds are produced through the wood wind instruments either by blowing through a mouth piece or a reed. Examples are clarinet, flute, English horn, recorder, piccolo, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, ocarina, harmonica e.t.c.

BRASS INSTRUMENTS:
To play a brass instrument, one needs to blow and vibrate the lips through a metal mouth piece. However to change pitch on a brass instrument like trombone, the slide is moved in and out while on the trumpet and French horn, a combination of fingerings and lip tension (embouchure) are used to alter the pitch. Examples are trombone, trumpet, tuba, French horn e.t.c.

KEYBOARD INSTRUMENTS:
Sounds are produced through these instruments by playing keys. Examples are upright piano, accordion, grand piano, organ, synthesizer, harpsichord e.t.c
